The article “TV Can Be a Good Parent”, written by Ariel Gore, discusses the influence television has on children. AAP reported that children and teens should not be watching television. However, the author, a single parent, addresses the issue differently. It seems that other people have mixed feelings about the issue also.
Throughout the text it shows how AAP’s new guidelines for parents and children are making people think about how much television they allow there children to watch. The AAP suggests that children, especially those under two years of age, should not be watching television.
After these guidelines were released, single mom Ariel Gore, was slightly upset. She is convinced that some educational programs never hurt. She claims that all parents need an “electronic baby sitter every now and then.” She feels educational shows such as Sesame Street aid parents in educating there children.
Many people agree with these new regulations. For example, Gore mentioned a pediatrician who was one hundred percent for the new guidelines. He stated in reference to television, “It’s not the best learning tool.” Still there are those who believe differently. Karen Reynolds, Nickelodeon’s New York publicity manager, believes it is interactive and that children are “using cognitive skills in a fun setting.”
In closing, there are many supporting details to both sides of the issue. However, it has not been proven one way or the other if television is beneficial or improper for children.
